Pastoral Article of the Month

How has media played a role in the growth of the church?

I believe media has been and will be an essential part of growth for the church.  We live in a media drenched world where people are "entertained" for the majority of their day.  The definition I like best for "entertain" is "to capture and hold one's attention".  If we are not doing that in the church then shame on us.  We have the most important story to tell and I believe using media will only help us do it in a more compelling way.

How much of a presence does media have in your service?

Media has an important presence in our services.  Our pastor uses many still photographs during his messages, we use moving backgrounds and videos as well.  I hope to continue to grow in this area.

Explain the transition from a not so saturated service to a very media
intensive service?  What kind of response have you seen?

The response we've seen has been completely positive.  People look forward to seeing what's next.

There is a common thought that media in a church service makes the service
feel like a performance rather than an outlet of worship, what are your thoughts?

Jesus himself used props to illustrate a point, he used the culture in his day to help the people understand his sermons.  I believe that is the way we are using media.  Purpose is always a burning factor for me - why are we doing this... If it's just to be cool or edgy then we're wrong -but if we better communicate the message - then we should completely go for it!

Where do you see media in ministry going in the next 5 years?

I believe using media in the church will continue to grow.  We're already seeing house churches begin and thrive being completely media driven, online experiences as well.  I hope and pray more young people will pursue television and technology and use their gifts for the church.
